The Flower Portrait (Altered State)

The Flower Portrait (Altered State) follows on from ‘Altered State’ series, steeped in myths and conspiracy that surround the authenticity and origin of certain works of art and artefact, in this particular piece, the origin of ‘The Flower Portrait’ of William Shakespeare, purported to be painted in 1609, later found to be a fake and painted in the 19th Century.

For my construction of ‘The Flower Portrait’, I combined these 'chance' images with other elements, materials and techniques, until it grew into its altered state. This and other portraits in the Altered State Series have become ‘shrouds’ or masks of themselves. An element of humour, however dark is evident without mocking the original, or forgery in this case!

The Flower Portrait (Altered State) has recently been exhibited in the 5th 100sqft exhibitions held in New Orleans and London towards the end of 2010.
